I created this video message with TokBox. This is an exceptional video messaging service. Messages are hosted by TokBox. It gives you a URL link that you can share with others (e.g., include the link in your course materials or in the text of an email message). Now, TokBox gives you embed code so that you can embed a player in your blog or web page.
TokBox understands the need for privacy of communication between instructor and student. Messages can be kept private, shared, or posted in course materials (or blog posting such as it is here). Control rests with the creator of the video message.
TokBox messages may last up to 15 minutes in length. I use TokBox to communicate with my students, provide feedback on assignments, and create short tutorial discussions.

Jack,
TokBox gives you a way to record a message and then add the URL link to a web posting. Readers can then click the URL link to view the video commentary. As with any type of public posting, “common sense” applies to what/how you say something. A video commentary is “warmer” than a “text” posting. Some people like this.
An alternative way to build a discussion board is to use VoiceThread (http://www.voicethread.com). With VoiceThread, you can upload a slide or image and then use text, audio, or video to comment about the topic displayed on the slide or image. You can set the parameters so that viewers can also post a comment (i.e., text, audio, or video).
VoiceThread takes a discussion board to a whole new level. You may find this option worth exploring.
